OCR: 3) Almost no matter how badly designed or poorly maintained the steam engine is, if the boiler can be made to generate steam, the engine will run. This is definitely not the case with most other heat engines, and was important during the 19th century, when fuel was cheap and steam engines were everywhere, with few real experts around to maintain them. 4) Boilers can be designed to burn almost any kind of fuel, making it possible to operate steam engines anywhere that reasonably clean water is available. 5) While most steam engine designs in the past were of relatively low efficiency (1-5%) and required a lot of maintenance, a modern steam engine can be as efficient as a gas engine, and may be better under some conditions, particularly stop and go service, since no transmission is required.
